When it comes to reversing the visible signs of aging, there are a variety of different options. The most dramatic results generally come from a surgical facelift. However, not everyone wants to commit to a surgical procedure and the associated downtime for recovery. There are also some people who are concerned about certain aspects of their appearance and would like facial rejuvenation, but aren’t yet at the point where they’re ready for a facelift.

We offer a variety of different nonsurgical options here in our office. One of our newest options is radiofrequency microneedling. This is an advanced treatment modality, in which radiofrequency (RF) energy is delivered into the skin through extremely tiny needles. RF microneedling offers effective rejuvenation with virtually no downtime.

How does RF energy affect the skin? How can it lead to facial rejuvenation?

The importance of collagen and elastin

In order to understand what RF energy does for the body, it’s important to understand what gives the skin its structure. Collagen and elastin are the two primary structural proteins of the skin. They’re always being broken down by environmental factors (such as sunlight), and the body is constantly generating new collagen and elastin to replace what’s lost.

However, over time, the balance changes. The body’s production of collagen and elastin slow down, and as the environmental factors continue to break down these proteins, the overall level of them in the skin declines. This causes the skin to lose its tightness, leading to issues like wrinkles and sagging.

RF energy stimulates the body’s healing response

When RF energy is delivered into the skin through microneedles, it causes localized heating of the tissue. This creates a small amount of damage to the tissue, which then stimulates the body’s natural healing response. As part of this healing response, increased amounts of collagen and elastin are generated. This helps to replenish the levels of these proteins in the skin, causing a tightening effect and helping the skin to regain its elasticity.

It’s very important to create just the right amount of tissue heating. The stimulus needs to be strong enough to evoke the body’s healing response, but not so strong that it causes excessive tissue damage that could lead to scarring. This is why it’s important to have your RF treatments performed by a trained professional. These treatments can be very effective, but they do have the potential to cause damage if they’re not done using proper techniques.
