A healthy diet and exercise are vital for our health and important to maintain the bodies we desire. But sometimes, no matter how much effort we put forth, it’s just not enough to get rid of the excess skin and fat on our arms. Try as we might, arm curls just aren’t enough. Fortunately, patients may find the results they desire in brachioplasty with Dr. Erik Miles.
What causes excess arm fat?

The undesired “chicken wing” effect can occur for a number of reasons. Excessive weight loss can result in loose and excess skin that exercise cannot address. Saggy and droopy skin that occurs below the arm is also more likely to occur as part of the aging process, as muscles weaken and collagen production decreases. Some people are simply more genetically prone to the trait as well.
What is brachioplasty?
Brachioplasty, also known as arm lift surgery, is a surgical procedure to tighten and tone the skin on the back of the arm. Also known as an underarm lift, brachioplasty is able to address a number of problematic areas of the arm. These include bulges, sagging, flaps of skin, and more. Even in those who might have good muscle tone, the arm is an area prone to excess skin that drapes below the arm.
Am I a candidate for brachioplasty?
If you are dissatisfied with drooping or sagging skin around the arm and seek tone and fit arms, brachioplasty may be for you. During your consultation, Dr. Miles will discuss your options for treatment and examine the arms for skin laxity and other factors. Ideal patients will be healthy nonsmokers who have maintained a consistent weight.
Can brachioplasty be combined with other procedures?
In some situations, brachioplasty may be combined with other procedures. Some patients may require liposuction to address difficult fat deposits in the arm. Brachioplasty can also be performed concurrently with other procedures. If you are interested in multiple surgical procedures to address problematic areas, discuss your options with Dr. Miles.
What can I expect during the procedure?
Prior to the procedure, anesthesia is administered. Depending on the extent of the procedure, an incision will be made to address the problematic areas. Any excess fat and skin can be trimmed away to achieve the desired results. Upon completion, the incision site will be closed with sutures.
What is the recovery process like?
Some swelling and bruising is expected following the procedure. Dr. Miles will provide you with specific post-operative care instructions. Your surgical site may be wrapped in dressings and elastic bandage or compression garment. It is beneficial to have someone available to assist you for the first few days following surgery. Most activities can be resumed after 14 days although exercise should be avoided for up to four weeks. Upon healing, a scar will be present but minimally visible. Dr. Miles does offer Embrace Scar Therapy as an option to all of his brachioplasty patients. This is a six week scar treatment that helps to minimize the appearance of scars..
