Can fat come back after liposuction?

Can fat come back after liposuction?

Liposuction Charlotte

For those who have genetic good fortune, a healthy lifestyle alone is enough to achieve the body they desire. For others, stubborn pockets of fat remain, despite their best efforts. Some people turn to liposuction for help. This is a surgical procedure designed to remove fat tissue from particular parts of the body.

Our patients may wonder what will happen after liposuction. Is it possible for the fat to grow back? What if you gain weight after you’ve had the procedure?

Liposuction permanently removes fat tissue

The good news is that the removal of fat tissue by liposuction is permanent. When our fat tissue gets larger or smaller, this happens primarily because each fat cell is storing larger or smaller amounts of fat, rather than because fat cells are being gained or lost.

The removal of fat cells through liposuction is permanent. The fat cells that we take out during liposuction will not grow back. As long as your weight remains relatively stable after your procedure, your results will remain permanently.

What happens if you gain weight after liposuction?

We recommend that you choose liposuction when you are at a stable and healthy weight, and that you do your best to maintain your weight afterwards. However, what will happen if you do gain some weight after having liposuction?

If you gain weight, then fat cells all around your body will potentially get larger as they store extra fat. However, because there are fewer fat cells in the area where you’ve had liposuction, that area will tend to gain less fat volume than other areas. In other words, even if you gain some weight, the area where you’ve had liposuction will likely be smaller than if you hadn’t had the procedure.

If you gain a very significant amount of weight after having liposuction, then relatively recent research demonstrates that it is possible for new fat cells to grow. However, since the new fat cells will be generated from your previously existing fat cells, fewer new cells will grow in areas with less fat. This means that fewer new fat cells should be created in the area where you’ve had liposuction. The difference in your relative body proportions should remain, although your overall body shape may change.

If you’re frustrated by stubborn pockets of fat that you can’t seem to get rid of, then liposuction might be an option for you. It’s important to remember that liposuction is not intended as a method of overall weight loss, but rather for body contouring through removing fat tissue from specific areas of the body. (If you need to lose a significant amount of weight, then liposuction might not be the option for you.)
